Carol Tjeerdsma, after recovering from
emergency heart surgery |
A cardiac stress test seemed "routine" and likely unnecessary for Carol Tjeerdsma. After all, Carol was in great health and walked more than 10,000 steps every day. Her lingering back pain made her decide to go forward with the test. It proved to be nearly fatal when Carol went into cardiac arrest during the stress test. After being stabilized at Mosaic Medical Center - Maryville (MMC-M) and transported to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph for emergency surgery, Carol and her family learned the severity of her heart condition. Carol is forever grateful for the life-saving care she received, close to home. Following surgery, she was able to rehabilitate at MMC-M's Cardiac Rehabilitation Department.
"Not only did they help me heal physically, but emotionally too," said Carol. "Walking in those doors and seeing the treadmill that first day was scary, but those amazing nurses were by my side, every step of the way." She tells her story in the video below to encourage everyone to get a cardiac score. This preventative screening can save your life |
